Sonny Hosea is best known for his desaturated photographs of quirky shop fronts. Sonny has a significant following on social media but spends his days working as a freelance graphic designer in charge of the social media for restaurants and cafes.
Sonny takes all of his pictures on his iPhone, describing his work “as a bit effortless and consistent“. When asked what was his catalyst to start taking pictures, Sonny responded “I think the first reason because I like photography. After that, I really like coffee hopping. I found that every interior is very unique and describe the characteristics of the coffee shop itself.”
In the Age of Instagram, everyone has the ability to become a photographer with the smartphone in their pocket. However, many travel photographers have been halted having to find content in their surroundings. Sonny had a trip to Copenhagen planned and subsequently cancelled due to corona virus, the global lockdown impacting his schedule.
Who or what inspires your aesthetic?
Sonny: I follow so many Instagrammers around the world. They're so great and inspire me a lot. And I believe the term "learning by doing"... The more you practice, the more you will gain.
Why do you think your photographs resonate with so many people?
Sonny: Maybe my Instagram is about coffee and travel? It will gain much attention if that connect with lifestyle, I guess.
Who are your favourite Japanese photographers?
Sonny: I really like @cafetyo. Maybe if I'm living in Japan, my Instagram would be like him/her.
